CellScope is a technology developed at UC Berkeley, which converts a standard cell phone into a fully functional microscope. Originally envisioned for disease diagnosis in developing countries, the technology has proven to be incredibly versatile. The CellScope offers high quality imaging, in a mobile, sturdy and easy to use platform. This combination of features has motivated scientists, museum curators, middle school students, and even artists to test CellScope in unusual locations including kitchens, gardens and sailboats. Kahi Kai (‘one sea’ in Hawaiian) is a project born in Hawaii. Kahi Kai stands for a unique ocean representing all oceans of our planet, which contain an amazing and mostly unknown biodiversity. The mission of Kahi Kai is to raise awareness about our ocean legacy and to appeal to our shared responsibility to preserve the fascinating, mysterious, and highly endangered marine world. The collaboration between CellScope and Kahi Kai enables us to provide hands-on experience in the field coupled with appealing images. Illustrating the living marine world is a powerful means for engaging future generations in marine conservation. We use the children’s natural curiosity and involve them not only in the collection of plankton, but also in the observation and documentation of the extraordinary diversity and unappreciated beauty of these organisms on the CellScopes.
